MLK day fell on a Monday this year (20 Jan, 2020), and it was my first day actually off in a long time (worked through winter holidays, don’t ask!).  I convinced hubby darling to take a day off as well and we decided to go see the Blue Mountain Resort.  I had heard a lot about this place and had been wanting to check it out for quite some time.

We left around 11 am (starting point: Greater Toronto Area), and reached Blue Mountain around 1 pm. Since it was a working day for the locals, we got lucky with traffic, parking and crowd. We were able to find parking right at the village entrance.

The village is not very big, but it still has a lot to offer. It has various winter activities. You can go skiing, snowboarding, tubing, and tobogganing.  There are many ski slopes (43 to be exact), ranging from beginners to expert level.  If you are not into any of those, the village also has some quaint little stores that are just fun to walk into (of course, you can shop too, hehe), and there are quite a few dining places.

For us, we weren’t prepared for any snow sports. Instead, we spent a few hours walking and exploring the village. We walked through each pathway in the village and explored all the shops along the way. It was very nice and refreshing.

For lunch, we ended up eating at Sunset Grill as we wanted something light. After that was my favourite Beaver Tails for dessert.

We continued to walk some more, and along the way, we chatted with a Blue Mountain guide, who recommended we see the “snow grooming” which happens at 4:30 pm every evening. They don’t close all the ski slopes at once, rather one at a time. It was indeed very interesting to see four massive machines moving up and down the hill in sync to groom the slopes. Highly recommend to check this out (sorry no pictures as I put my camera away to look at the giant machines rolling on the hill!).

There was also a big fire pit, but unfortunately, it was not burning that day.  I wish I could have seen that.

Because I needed to get back home early, I also missed the last attraction for the evening, the “Blumination” Dream Trail. It is a 1 KM trail along the Mill Pond. We walked this during day light, but unfortunately could not stay to watch the light show after dark. It sure sounded interesting and  I hope to go back soon to check it out.

Of course, with Blue Mountain being a resort, there are hotels right in the village if you are looking to stay a night or few, or if you are into skiing. However, for me personally, I think it is good for a day trip. Another tip, if you are looking for a very lively environment full of people, I would recommend to go on a weekend. If you are okay with no crowd and less noise, then weekday is the way to go.

Would definitely recommend to go check this out. For more pictures, check out the gallery here
